History of the Petroleum Building

11.19.14

We love the view from Modworks, on the 13th floor of the Petroleum building on 16th and Broadway in Downtown Denver. The 5-sided building has a unique history in Denver, Colorado.   The Petroleum Club Building was the tallest building in Denver when it was built in 1957. The Meisian-style Petroleum Club Building was designed by Charles Strong, who is famous locally as the architect of the Art Deco Poet’s Row.   During the time the building went up, the oil and gas industry was booming in the Rocky Mountain region and Denver was the regional oil capital. The building cost $4.5 million dollars and housed the Petroleum Club on floors 12 and 13, Columbia Savings and Loan Association on the basement and first floors and oil industry offices on the remaining floors. The 14th floor was the Penthouse, which housed two of Denver's most noted citizens of the period - banker Kenneth King and then-oilman Marvin Davis.

The Petroleum Club of Denver was the nation's biggest oil club when the building was erected. More than $500,000 was spent on furnishing the two floors of the club - a large sum at the time. The bar was one of the biggest in Denver - 60 feet long, with dark wood tables and chairs, a stained-glass back bar, and the walls adorned with plaques of the oil companies that were members. At its peak, the Petroleum Club building was home to 33 oil companies.   50 years after the building was erected, in 2007, a time capsule from 1957 was opened by the current owners of the building, Tim Borst and Lou DellaCava. They found the Petroleum Club Membership Directory, a couple of newspaper front pages, a 1922 dollar coin, a vial of petroleum, and a piece of unprocessed silver inside.   The 14th-floor Penthouse has been vacant for years, and it even had an illegal porn studio occupying it for a period of time. The historic building recently underwent a remodel, adding the sunscreens, the red spear going up the side, and more. John Borst and Gabe Henriques worked maintenance at the Petroleum Building before they teamed up with John's father, Tim Borst, to co-found Modworks. The trio completely remodeled the 13th floor starting in May 2014, furnished the space with HON furniture and Modworks opened for business in July 2014.

Located in the heart of downtown Denver on the 13th floor of the Petroleum Building, Modworks is a refined coworking environment that offers productive, hassle-free workspace solutions that range from private offices to daily passes. Book a Free Tour today.
