Coworking in the Mountains, Pt II

01.17.17

Last month, we took a look at a brand new coworking space that has since opened MID MOUNTAIN at Heavenly Resort in Lake Tahoe. Requiring a lift ticket and a membership, this coworking space is not just in the town of Lake Tahoe, but takes an uphill Gondola ride to get there. Members who utilize the space can ski back out, a perfect place for ski bums who just need to get a little work done.

Well, we’re in Colorado, and we love the snow too. So when we heard that this is becoming a more common occurrence around the world, we couldn’t simply leave it alone. While it’s still a matter of time before a coworking space opens mid mountain at a Colorado Resort, the pieces are being put in place.

According to European tech site Digitale, a space has just opened up at the popular Bansko ski resort in Bulgaria. Coworking spaces have existed in mountain towns like Vail, Breckenridge, Tahoe, and others for a while now, but the actual resorts are just now getting into the action, and opening a ski-in, ski-out space is nothing short of revolutionary.

Also becoming a pattern are coworking alliances. In a twist of industry norms, coworking has turned the tables and favored more friendly competition. For example, Denver Coworks is a group of coworking spaces in the Denver area that together share events, sponsor programs, and even refer members based on capacity and needs. Normally, location is the basis for these alliances, but mountain town coworking spaces have used the skiing lifestyle as the common ground. Called the Mountain Coworking Alliance, spaces all over the world are members of this group.

It makes sense. Skiers and Snowboarders love a flexible lifestyle that allows them to work a schedule that lets them hit the slopes at non-peak times. Many enjoy the notion of getting a little work done, hitting the mountain for a few hours, and then returning to work later. Combining the visibility and growing trend of Mountain Coworking spaces with the new alliance, the demand for these types of spaces will only grow. When organized, and in partnership with the resorts - like Mountain Labs at Heavenly worked with Vail Resorts - a space could realistically open on the mountain here in Colorado. Here’s to when the first one opens up here in Colorado - you can bet that we’ll be there to check it out!
